Black woodpecker on oak

27 May 2002 04:45

Black woodpecker, (thrush nightingale, golden oriole, hawfinch, blackcap, cuckoo, icterine warbler).

Soon after the previous take and very close to the same location, the scarlet-crowned king of the wood broadcasts from high up in an old oak rising above the surrounding alders. For this the mics were just within the outer ring of alders and the dripping of the overnight dew on the alder leaves is pronounced. After about 3.5 minutes the tone of the drumming changes: probably the bird has moved slightly to hammer on a different piece of wood. Around 5 minutes in, either our bird has moved or its neighbour begins drumming in the distance.
