Edge of alder swamp

27 May 2002 04:15

Dripping wet from overnight mists. Golden oriole, thrush nightingale, woodpigeon, corncrake, cuckoo, river warbler, blackcap, icterine warbler, black woodpecker.

On the edge of my base, a clearing in the forest where a bridge crosses the river Narewka, there’s an alder wood growing from a peat bog with pools of dark stagnant water. After hearing the community in this dank wood the previous morning at around 7am, I came back the next day closer to dawn. Alder woods generally don’t seem to attract a lot of attention from naturalists, but these alder swamps in Poland have a characteristic bird community and a wonderful sound.
