River clearing

26 May 2002 06:30

Yellowhammer, whitethroat, golden oriole, marsh warbler, thrush nightingale, wryneck, black woodpecker, cuckoo, river warbler.

Back to base in the clearing, this is taken from out in the open. It’s within walking distance of the edge of Bialowieza village - particularly lovely in the early morning and evening of a warm day. Grading from lightly-farmed fields through dry scrub to the lusher herbage and willows along the riverside, this area has one of the richest communities of birds in the forest. So there are birds of the field edges, yellowhammer and whitethroat, but also birds of the damper shrubbery, like thrush nightingale and marsh warbler. Scattered trees through the open areas provide a network of perches on flight-paths from the deeper forest surrounding.

Near the start a group of three fisherman pass nearby on their way down the river. Later a river warbler, a speciality of the area, comes close and begins his monologues with creaky openings. This is a Locustella warbler - sounds like a grasshopper or cricket. Or an old sewing machine.
