Whitethroat on umbellifers

26 May 2002 07:30

With cuckoo, thrush nightingale, river warbler, yellowhammer.

Back in the main clearing on the edge of the farm fields where there’s drier scrub, sunny, warming, insects moving into flight. Birds which we may think of as hedgerow species, reflect their origins here as species of forest clearings. The whitethroat rattles off his song in brief, fast jingles when perched, then every so often launches into a fluttering songflight (0:24, 1:52, 4:16), with a sweeter, more continuous warble, en route to another perch.
